The Soul: a Hang pioneer crossing boundaries The half Dutch-Swiss, half American Pierce Lohman a.k.a. The Soul is a man with a mission. He is part of the first generation of Hang players and has set himself the task of discovering the possibilities of this divers instrument. The first Hang was made about 8 years ago in Bern in Switzerland. The UFO-shaped Hang is played using your hands, it is no coincidence the name Hang means ‘hand’ in the Bern dialect. Instruments like the steelpan and steeldrum were the inspiration to design the Hang, but the Hang itself is certainly not a conventional percussion instrument. What makes the instrument so special is that each individual Hang has it’s own intonation, even though all Hangs have the same special sound that reaches very far without being abrasive. Lohman already played various percussion instruments when he first heard of the Hang and was quick to decide he wanted to play this brand-new instrument. When Lohman bought his first Hang in Bern the instrument had only existed for a year. The Hang has no musical tradition and therefore no limits or rules. The special character of the instrument presents the Hang player with great challenges and The Soul is more than happy to take these on. Because it is impossible to write a piece that can be played by any Hang, The Soul has to learn and experiment continuously. Playing the Hang is not a technical matter but is done entirely by intuition and feeling. This is why Lohman’s artist name is The Soul! Ever looking for new possibilities The Soul has already combined his music with various percussion instruments, a saxophone and even with nature sounds. In August he will release two albums on Langweilligkeit Records. One is a solo album, the other a very experimental album on which he will make daring combinations with different music styles. He will record songs with a lot of different musicians, among them the African singer Omar Ka. There will also be a few dance tracks on the album, in collaboration with DJ Psychostorm. The Soul will break down all boundaries in music!

Hij behoort tot de eerste generatie Hang spelers en heeft zich ten doel gesteld te ontdekken wat de mogelijkheden zijn van dit diverse instrument. De Hang is ongeveer 8 jaar geleden voor het eerst gemaakt in Bern in Zwitserland. De UFO-vormige Hang wordt bespeeld met de handen, de naam Hang betekent niet voor niets ‘hand’ in het dialect van Bern. Inspiratie om de Hang te ontwerpen kwam van instrumenten als de steelpan en de steeldrum maar de Hang is bij lange na geen conventioneel percussie-instrument. Elke individuele Hang heeft namelijk een eigen klank, hoewel alle Hangs hetzelfde bijzondere geluid hebben dat erg ver draagt zonder indringend te zijn. Lohman bespeelde al veel verschillende percussie instrumenten toen hij van de Hang hoorde en hoefde niet lang te twijfelen of hij de uitdaging van dit nieuwe instrument aan zou gaan. Toen Lohman zijn eerste Hang kocht in Bern bestond het instrument pas een jaar. De Hang heeft geen muzikale traditie en kent hierdoor geen grenzen en regels. Het bijzondere karakter van het instrument stelt de Hang speler voor grote uitdagingen en die gaat The Soul met verve tegemoet. Omdat het niet mogelijk is een stuk te schrijven dat door verschillende Hangs kan worden gespeeld is The Soul voortdurend aan het leren en experimenteren. Het spelen van de Hang is geen technische zaak maar gaat volledig op gevoel. Om deze reden is Lohman’s artiestennaam ook The Soul! Voortdurend op zoek naar nieuwe mogelijkheden heeft The Soul zijn muziek al gecombineerd met verschillende percussie instrumenten, een saxofoon en zelfs met natuurgeluiden. In augustus brengt hij bij Langweiligkeit Records een solo album uit en ook een zeer experimenteel album waarop hij meer uitdagende samenwerkingen aangaat dan ooit te voren. Hij zal nummers opnemen met zeer uiteenlopende musici waaronder de Afrikaanse zanger Omar Ka. Ook verschijnen er enkele dance nummers op het album, in samenwerking met DJ Psychostorm. The Soul rekent af met elke hokjesgeest in de muziek!
